Matt Allwright

Profile Overview

Matthew Allwright was born on 14 April 1970 in Wokingham, Berkshire, England. His mother featured in some of his early Watchdog segments as a consumer commentator, but wider details about his parents and family background are not publicly documented.

Allwright was educated at Dolphin School in Hurst and Reading Blue Coat School in Sonning, where he was Head Boy, followed by the University of Manchester, where he gained a degree in English. After graduating, he spent three years in Japan teaching English in high schools before returning to the UK to pursue broadcasting.

His big break came in 1997 when he contacted BBC Watchdog to complain about his mother’s faulty tumble dryer; the BBC saw potential and asked him to present the report himself. This led to more than two decades of BBC consumer affairs presenting, including Rogue Traders — where he conducted over 100 doorstep confrontations with fraudulent traders — and Watchdog, which he fronted from 2009 to 2019.

Doorbell Detectives is a five-part BBC One series in which Allwright investigates neighbourhood crime through the experiences of victims who have used smart doorbells and domestic CCTV to help police track down criminals. Series 1 aired in June 2025 and Series 2 followed in June 2026, both filmed at dock10 Studios in Manchester.

Matt Allwright keeps his personal and family life entirely private. However, based on the little information available, he is married, has two children, and currently lives in London.
