Mark McGrath was born on March 15, 1968, in Hartford, Connecticut, and moved with his family to Newport Beach, California, at age eight. He attended the University of Southern California, where he studied communications. Around the same time, he formed the band that would become Sugar Ray.
Sugar Ray signed with Atlantic Records in 1994 and broke through nationally with the 1997 hit “Fly.” The band followed with additional chart-topping songs, including “Every Morning” and “Someday,” making McGrath one of the defining faces of late-1990s pop rock. While still performing, he began hosting VH1 and MTV programs, which caught the attention of TV producers.
In 2004, McGrath joined NBC’s Extra as a co-host, a role he held until 2008. He went on to host Don’t Forget the Lyrics! in 2010, Killer Karaoke on truTV in 2013–2014, and The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll on The CW in 2007. In 2021, he became the narrator and host of VICE TV’s Dark Side of the 90s, extending to Dark Side of the 2000s in 2023. He continues to perform with Sugar Ray and hosts a weekly show on SiriusXM’s 90s on 9.
