Huq was born in Hammersmith, west London to Sunni Muslim Bangladeshi parents who had emigrated to England in the 1960s. She grew up in Ealing, west London, with her two elder sisters, Rupa and Nutun. Her father opened his own restaurant in his locality; her mother was a homemaker. Her sister, Rupa Huq, became a prominent British Labour politician.
Huq was educated at Notting Hill & Ealing High School in London and left school with nine GCSEs and A-levels in physics, mathematics and chemistry. Despite having studied the sciences for her A-levels, she chose to read economics and graduated with a 2:1 from Robinson College, Cambridge. After graduating from Cambridge University, Konnie Huq trained part-time at the National Youth Music alongside actors Jude Law and Jonny Lee Miller.
By the time she was 16, Konnie was presenting shows on TVFM, GMTV, Channel 5 and BBC’s Newsround, interviewing politicians such as Neil Kinnock and appearing on quiz shows. In 1994, she took on duties of the full-time host with the children’s quiz show Eat Your Words and followed it up with a television presenter stint on Milkshake! She presented the BBC children’s television programme Blue Peter, starting on 1 December 1997. She is the third longest-serving Blue Peter presenter and its longest-serving female host, having passed Valerie Singleton’s record on 1 October 2007.
On 26 July 2010, Konnie Huq married writer and satirist Charlie Brooker at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas after a nine-month relationship. They have two sons, Covey born 23 March 2012 and Huxley born 28 February 2014. Konnie has often spoken about her decision to reduce her screen appearances to focus on raising her children.
