Katty Kay was born 14 November 1964 in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, England. She grew up in Blewbury and spent parts of her childhood in several Middle Eastern countries where her father served as a British diplomat. Her mother was a journalist, which influenced Kay’s early interest in media and global affairs.
She studied modern languages at St Hilda’s College, University of Oxford, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1988. Fluent in French and Italian, Kay initially worked briefly at the Bank of England before moving to Zimbabwe to work with an aid agency, where she became interested in journalism.
In 1990, Kay joined the BBC World Service as a correspondent in Zimbabwe. She later worked in London, Tokyo, and Washington, D.C., reporting on international news. Her career expanded into television presenting as she became a prominent BBC journalist covering global politics.
Kay gained worldwide recognition as the presenter of BBC World News America, broadcast on BBC World News and PBS stations in the United States. She also co-hosted the political programme Beyond 100 Days on BBC News and BBC Four, analysing U.S. and global politics.
She currently lives in Washington, D.C., with her family and continues working as a journalist, author, and political commentator.
