John Amadeus Devenanzio was born on June 22, 1982, in Santa Monica, California, and raised in Fullerton, California. He attended Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. The moniker “Bananas” came from a stint working at Banana Republic and, going back even further, to an incident in his youth when he stuffed bananas in his mother’s car’s tailpipe in an attempt to avoid school.
He made his television debut on the 17th season of The Real World: Key West on MTV in 2006, before transitioning to its spin-off, The Challenge — where he became one of the franchise’s top competitors, winning a record seven championships and accumulating over $1.1 million in prize money. In 2018, he expanded into hosting, taking the helm of NBC’s travel and lifestyle show 1st Look until 2023.
Devenanzio has also appeared as a contestant on The Traitors (Peacock), House of Villains (E!), The Challenge: USA (CBS) and Netflix’s Pop the Balloon Live. In addition, he founded Bad Banana Productions, through which he develops and produces original television content.
