James Broad was born and raised in the leafy Cheshire countryside, where he developed an appreciation for antiques from an early age. His weekends were often spent rummaging through charity shops, car boot sales, and antiques fairs. One particular moment in Birmingham marked the turning point in his career aspirations: as a young boy, he encountered a stall full of antique pocket and wristwatches, and the stallholder took time to share his knowledge — an act of generosity that left a lasting impression and ignited his ambition.
James attended Mid Cheshire College, where he earned a diploma in Sports and Exercise, graduating with distinction. At just 17, he took on a portering role at a local auction house, and six months into the job he was given the opportunity to step onto the rostrum as an auctioneer — an experience that confirmed his career path.
In 2016, James founded James Broad Interiors, travelling the country sourcing unique items and dedicating evenings to restoration and photography. He also gained experience with Populuxe Home Boutique, a company specialising in mid-20th-century furniture restoration, which broadened his knowledge of design.
Today he is Associate Director and Lead Auctioneer at Whittaker & Biggs Auction Room in Congleton, Cheshire, standing on the very rostrum where he once stacked chairs. James married Emma Pawsey on 14 November 2024 at Shustoke Barn, Warwickshire.
