Henry Golding was born on 5 February 1987 in Betong, Sarawak, Malaysia. His mother, Margaret Likan Golding, is of Iban (indigenous Malaysian) heritage, while his father, Clive Golding, is English. He spent his early childhood in Malaysia before moving to Surrey, England, at age eight.
After finishing school, Golding chose not to attend university and instead trained as a hairdresser in London. In his early 20s, he moved back to Malaysia to pursue a career in television, where he began working as a presenter on regional travel and lifestyle programmes.
He gained wider recognition as a presenter of The Travel Show on BBC News and BBC Two, starting around 2014. The programme features global travel stories and cultural reporting, and Golding contributed as a roaming correspondent.
In 2018, he transitioned into acting with his breakout role in Crazy Rich Asians, which launched his Hollywood career. He went on to star in films such as A Simple Favor, Last Christmas, and Snake Eyes. Golding currently lives in Venice Beach, California, with his wife and children, balancing film work with media and creative projects.
