Eric Knowles was born on 19 February 1953 in Nelson, Lancashire, England. As he grew up in Lancashire, he developed an early interest in antiques.

He attended Nelson Secondary Technical School before beginning his career in 1976 as a porter in the ceramics department at Bonhams auction house. Through dedication and expertise, he rose to become head of the department by 1981 and later a director in decorative arts.

Knowles transitioned into television, becoming a well-known expert on BBC antiques programmes including Antiques Roadshow and Restoration Roadshow. He also appeared on Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is.

Following the departure of Tim Wonnacott, he became one of the rotating presenters of Bargain Hunt on BBC One, further increasing his popularity with daytime audiences.

He lives in the UK and remains active in antiques, broadcasting, and charity work.
