David Muir is an Emmy Award-winning American broadcast journalist and the anchor. Born in 1973 in Syracuse, New York, Muir grew up in Onondaga Hill and developed an interest in broadcast journalism from a very young age. He attended Ithaca College, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

Muir began his journalism career in local television news, first working at WTVH-TV in Syracuse as an anchor and reporter. He later moved to Boston to work at WCVB-TV, where his reporting earned regional Emmy recognition. In 2003, he joined ABC News as an anchor of World News Now, eventually becoming the weekend anchor. 

In 2014, he succeeded Diane Sawyer as sole anchor and managing editor of World News Tonight. He also co-anchors 20/20 and serves as ABC News’ lead anchor for breaking news and special events. Off-air, Muir is a devoted uncle to six nieces and three nephews, and owns a German Shorthaired Pointer named Axel.
