Chris Hull grew up in Tavistock, Devon, surrounded by countryside. His mum was a keen gardener and his stepfather was a forester. His first job as a teenager was at a local hotel working in the garden, where he became more interested in horticulture through the head gardeners there.
Chris attended The Cornwall College Group and studied Countryside and Wildlife Management, before attending Sparsholt College Hampshire, where he graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Garden Design, Upper Second Class. He subsequently worked as a gardener at John Bailey Garden Design (2011–2013), then as a Horticulture and Plantsmanship Study Coach at Sparsholt College (2015–2016), as a freelance garden designer (2015–2016), and as Senior Landscape Designer at Janine Pattison Studios in Poole (2016–2019).
In January 2019, Chris founded Greenbook Landscape Design, based in Bath, providing landscape and garden design services across Bath, Bristol, Somerset, Wiltshire, and Hampshire. He applied for Garden Rescue after spotting an email from the production company forwarded by the Society of Garden Designers, filmed himself pretending to be on a gardening show, and got the role.
In 2023, Chris married Zoe, an interior designer, and the couple are based in Bath. His father is a paranoid schizophrenic, and Chris is an ambassador for the Rethink Mental Illness charity, working to break down the stigma around mental illness.
