Cathy Newman was born on 14 July 1974 in Guildford, Surrey, England. Both her parents — David Newman and Julia Worsdall — are chemistry teachers. Her father taught at Charterhouse School, where she later attended sixth form. She also has an older sister named Sarah, a music teacher.
From an early age Newman showed a passion for literature and music, initially aspiring to become a violinist, having studied with a Royal College of Music professor. She was inspired to pursue journalism after watching the bold reporting of BBC’s Kate Adie. She earned a First-Class Honours degree in English Language and Literature from Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford in 1995.
Newman began her journalism career in print media, starting with Media Week, before moving to The Independent as a business correspondent, and then to the Financial Times as a political correspondent in September 1999. She also spent time at The Washington Post. She joined Channel 4 News in January 2006 as a political correspondent, becoming one of its main presenters from 2011 and its first female lead presenter.
In April 2026, Newman moved to Sky News to front The Cathy Newman Show, a flagship evening programme airing Monday to Thursday at 7pm across Sky News, YouTube and digital platforms, combining political journalism, major interviews, debate and exclusive investigations. She is married to John O’Connell, a writer and literary critic, whom she met at Oxford. They have two daughters, one of whom, Scarlett, graduated from Pembroke College, Oxford in 2025.
