Caron Keating

Profile Overview

Caron Keating was born on 5 October 1962 in Fulham, London, to BBC television producer Don Keating and broadcaster Gloria Hunniford. The family relocated to Northern Ireland when she was just three months old, where she spent her formative years. She attended Methodist College Belfast, where she gained 8 O-levels and 3 A-levels.

After earning an honours degree in English and Drama from the University of Bristol, Keating joined Blue Peter as one of its younger presenters, where her engaging style made her a standout figure during her four-year tenure. Her Blue Peter career included a trip to Moscow in 1987 during the perestroika period, swimming with sharks, abseiling down skyscrapers, and standing strapped to the top of a light aircraft whilst it performed aerial acrobatics. She also interviewed Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on the programme in 1988.

After Blue Peter, Caron presented Top of the Pops, 4th Dimension, Wide Angle, the BBC1 lunchtime current affairs show Summer Scene, and reported from the Olympics in Barcelona. She hosted her own radio magazine show for BBC Radio 5, fronted consumer affairs show Family Affairs alongside her mother Gloria Hunniford, and co-presented Schofield’s Quest with Phillip Schofield.

In January 1998, Caron returned to screens to present This Morning with Richard Madeley and Phillip Schofield, and the ITV prime-time consumer show We Can Work It Out. In December 1999, she took a sabbatical due to her recurring illness, spending time with her family in Fowey, Cornwall. She returned to TV in September 2001 to present Rich and Famous on ITV. In December 2001, she moved to Byron Bay, Australia with her husband and two sons. She returned to the UK in April 2004 and died peacefully at her mother’s home in Kent on 13 April 2004.
