Callum Tulley was born in 1997 in England. He started working at Brook House Immigration Removal Centre, then run by security firm G4S, as an assistant custody officer in 2015 when he was 18 years old. His parents, hometown, and early upbringing are not publicly confirmed.

After witnessing the mistreatment of migrants at Brook House — a detention centre near Gatwick — Callum approached a BBC Panorama producer. He was just 19 years old. He witnessed chaotic scenes, self-harm, and suicide attempts, with some officers mocking, mistreating, and even abusing detainees. He wore a hidden camera while working as a detention custody officer, filming across 37 shifts at the centre. He said he was “effectively a mole for the BBC for 14 months.”

His footage uncovered chaos, incompetence and abuse, and became the centrepiece of a primetime BBC One documentary — Panorama Undercover: Britain’s Immigration Secrets. His film won multiple awards, sent shockwaves through Parliament, and resulted in a public inquiry commissioned by the Home Secretary on behalf of the Prime Minister.

Callum went on to work as a producer and reporter for the BBC News Channel, then as a reporter for BBC Three’s Racism in the Ranks. When BBC Three returned to linear television in February 2022, he became one of its three regular news presenters on The Catch Up — a weeknight bulletin aimed at 16 to 34-year-olds, produced by BBC News.
