Bryant Gumbel

Profile Overview

Born in New Orleans and raised in Chicago, Bryant Gumbel attended Bates College, where he earned a degree in Russian History. He began his career as a writer and editor for Black Sports magazine before transitioning to TV as a sportscaster for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. 

Gumbel later started appearing in NBC Sports telecasts and quickly rose through the ranks to become a national fixture at NBC Sports. In 1982, he transitioned to news as the co-host of Today, a role that solidified his status as a broadcasting icon. He co-anchored the show for 15 years before stepping down in 1997. 

Following his departure from Today and NBC, Gumbel spent time at CBS before launching the acclaimed investigative series Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO in 1995. The program ran
