He began his career at the BBC working for Radio Wales in Cardiff, producing the morning programme Good Morning Wales. After joining the BBC’s trainee scheme, he moved to London to work in the Business and Economics Unit of BBC News, producing reports and programmes about global markets and finance.

In 2008 he became the BBC’s Middle East Business Correspondent, based in Dubai, reporting across the region on the global financial crisis and the Arab Spring. He later served as North America Business Correspondent in New York, covering major economic events and reporting from Wall Street and US political developments.

Thompson later returned to the UK where he became a regular presenter on BBC Breakfast, Business Live, and World Business Report. He continues to appear on BBC News programmes and international business coverage.

Away from broadcasting, he lives in London and keeps much of his private life out of the public spotlight, though he occasionally shares details about his partner, Andy Roche on social media.
