Alton Brown

Profile Overview

Alton Brown is an acclaimed American television personality, chef, and author known for his scientific approach to cooking. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Georgia, he studied filmmaking at the University of Georgia. After college, Brown began his professional journey as a cinematographer and director for TV commercials and music videos.

Dissatisfied with food television in the early 1990s, Brown enrolled at the New England Culinary Institute to merge his filmmaking skills with culinary training. That combination gave birth to Good Eats, a one-of-a-kind cooking show that blended food science, history, chemistry, and offbeat comedy. The pilot aired on PBS in July 1998, and Food Network picked it up in 1999, where it aired for 14 seasons. He revived the franchise with Good Eats: Reloaded on Cooking Channel and Good Eats: The Return on Food Network (2019–2021).

Beyond Good Eats, Brown served as the witty play-by-play commentator on Iron Chef America. He also co-hosted and judged The Next Iron Chef across multiple seasons and hosted Cutthroat Kitchen from 2013 to 2017. In 2022, he co-hosted Netflix’s rebooted Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend alongside Kristen Kish.
