Alan Michael Sugar was born on 24 March 1947 in Hackney, East London, England. His father, Nathan Sugar, worked as a tailor, and he grew up in a working-class family in a council flat.
He left school at 16 and began earning money through small businesses before founding Amstrad in 1968. The company became one of the UK’s leading electronics manufacturers, producing affordable hi-fi systems, computers, and satellite equipment.
Sugar later expanded into property investment and football, serving as chairman of Tottenham Hotspur from 1991 to 2001. His public profile rose significantly when he became the host of The Apprentice on BBC One in 2005, where he invests in business candidates.
He was knighted in 2000 and made a life peer in 2009, becoming Baron Sugar in the House of Lords.
Sugar is married to Ann Simons and they have three children. Baron Sugar divides his time between business ventures and television, remaining one of the UK’s most recognisable entrepreneurs.
