Alan Davies was born on 6 March 1966 in Loughton, Essex, England. His mother died when he was young, and he was raised primarily by his father.
He attended Bancroft’s School before studying at Loughton College of Further Education. He later earned a degree in Drama and Theatre Studies from the University of Kent, graduating in 1988, and went on to complete a Master’s degree in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Davies began his career as a stand-up comedian in 1988, performing in clubs across the UK. He gained recognition in the 1990s and won the Edinburgh Festival Critics Award for Comedy in 1994.
He rose to wider fame starring in Jonathan Creek (BBC) from 1997 and became a household name as the only regular panellist on QI, broadcast on BBC Two (later BBC One), from its launch in 2003.
He lives in the UK with his wife and continues to work in television, stand-up comedy, and writing.
