Alan Cumming was born on January 27, 1965, in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland, and grew up on Panmure Estate near Carnoustie. He attended Carnoustie High School before training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. He began his career in Scottish theatre and television before establishing himself as an acclaimed stage and screen performer in the United Kingdom and the United States. 

Although best known as an actor, Cumming has become one of television’s most distinctive hosts. Since 2008, he has introduced PBS’s Masterpiece Mystery!, and since 2023, he has hosted Peacock’s hit reality competition The Traitors. His theatrical hosting style has helped transform the series into one of television’s biggest reality successes, earning him multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program. 

Beyond television, Cumming is an accomplished author, cabaret performer, activist, and producer. In 2025, he became Artistic Director of Pitlochry Festival Theatre in Scotland, where he oversees the company’s artistic vision. As of 2026, he continues hosting The Traitors, Masterpiece Mystery!, and special television events while balancing acting and stage work.
