Adam Fleming was born 2 April 1980 in Glasgow, Scotland. He grew up there and attended Hutchesons’ Grammar School, later studying geography at Hertford College, Oxford, where he graduated with a first-class degree in 2001. While at university he edited the student newspaper The Oxford Student and worked in local radio.
Fleming began his journalism career in Scotland working for The Herald, Daily Record, and STV before joining the BBC. Early in his BBC career he appeared on the children’s news programme Newsround on CBBC while studying broadcast journalism at City University London.
He later worked as a reporter for BBC News 24, became a Westminster reporter, and served as the BBC’s Brussels correspondent, covering European Union politics and the Brexit negotiations. During this time he co-created and hosted the BBC podcast and TV programme Brexitcast.
Fleming later became BBC News’ Chief Political Correspondent in 2020. He now presents the BBC political podcast and television programme Newscast and also hosts AntiSocial on BBC Radio 4. He regularly appears on BBC News programmes and occasionally guest-hosts Newsnight on BBC Two and programmes on BBC Radio 5 Live.
