Abi Trotman’s introduction to miniatures came from her maternal grandmother, who was an avid collector and crafter. When Abi would admire dollshouse miniatures in shops, her grandmother always encouraged her to make her own versions instead of buying them, so she has been making miniatures since around the age of 8. Her business name, Tobacco & Regrets, is a tribute to her grandmother too — everything her grandmother gave her smelled of cigarette smoke and tobacco, which became incredibly nostalgic for Abi and the inspiration behind her whole aesthetic.
Abi studied Contemporary Textile Practice at university, which gave her a grounding in how different materials, wood, metal, fabric, paper, plastic, resin, and plaster can be used and manipulated. She then began a career in arts administration and gallery and studio management. She worked at Penarth Pier Pavilion, where colleagues noted her exceptional creativity and expertise in curating exhibitions and working with artists.
It wasn’t until 2021 that Abi decided to fully launch her arts career and facilitate her own creativity rather than other people’s. She creates and sells miniature fine art scenes, dioramas, and one-of-a-kind 1/12th scale dollshouse furniture and accessories throughout the UK, Europe, and the US at prestigious shows such as Kensington Dollshouse Festival, Tom Bishop Chicago International, and Miniatura UK.
Abi has spoken openly about making miniatures as a massively therapeutic pastime that has helped her deal with her own mental illness. She is based in Barry, South Wales, and is also a mother, juggling family life alongside her full-time career as a miniaturist.
